Not even a failed Kickstarter campaign could keep this project down.

Wayward Terran Frontier was a space captain role playing game where you play as the crew of a star ship. It seemed ambitious for a indie game with a primary game mechanic that allowed running around inside massive battleships while they shoot holes in each other inside an infinite procedural universe. However the game failed a Kickstarter in February and many of the fans presumed that meant the game was dead. Indeed for a long time the game went completely without updates to either the playable free client or the development blog at wtfrontier.com.

"I wanted to quit after the first Kickstarter, I had put my savings into the project and without a dedicated team to help run the Kickstarter I got pretty burnt out running everything solo. I was ready to move on and enjoy a 9-5 and a social life again." -George Hultgren, only developer for the project

However apparently that isn't what happened in the long run. After a long period of silence, small updates started to trickle back into the website, in fact the entire website has been redesigned from the ground up while nobody was looking. Now, more recently developer George Hultgren has come back to the old Kickstarter page with an announcement that the game is rising back from the dead. Also announced: the team has a new full time artist.
Apparently they have been working this entire time to refocus the game into an entirely new product.
Under the team's new artist the game has undergone a serious face lift.

"Through the failed Kickstarter I met an artist who said he wanted to practically redo everything. It wasn't an easy decision, but I was ultimately won over by the quality of the artwork. I had to find a way to make the project work without funding."-George Hultgren

On Oct 30th the developers announced a new update has been pushed to the free version of the game. This version is mostly a toy for playing with the ship editor and the game engine which doesn't represent actual gameplay. However having access to the improved and debugged ship editor with a load of updated art assets and new mechanics has rekindled the small community around the game.
New videos can be seen on the creator's youtube channel which are awkwardly narrated by George himself. They show gameplay features including entering an asteroid and exploring procedural caves, boarding and exploring an abandoned pirate ship, and raiding a supply convoy to get loot. In the last scene a cinematic reactor explosion cleaves a civilian ship clear in half leaving the bridge and cargo bays intact while bits of engines fly into the dark. He then proceeds to board the ship, shoot up the crew, and take blueprints from the cargo hold.

The game is looking better than ever and It appears the developers are getting ready to go back to Kickstarter for attempt number 2, this time as a team with a much stronger presentation. Keep an eye out for announcements of the upcoming Wayward Terran Frontier: Zero Falls Kickstarter.
